Art Gallery Opening Reception

Our winery has teamed up with Hamburg’s own Centennial Art Center to become a gallery space for local artists. Our first show features the works of David and Joe Lesinki. David’s specialty is still life and portrait paintings, while his son, Joe, concentrates on wildlife. Their works will be on display and available for purchase at the winery throughout the months of February and March. On Tuesday February 7 at 7 PM, we will have an Opening Reception. It is a great opportunity to view the new gallery and to meet the artists. The event is open to the public and is free of charge.

Historical Note: The Village of Hamburg celebrated its 100^th birthday in 1974. The old Village fire house that is now our winery was the central gathering place for many of the events. The park outside was dedicated as Centennial Park. An art association was formed in 1975 and rented the second floor of the old fire house building. They called themselves the Centennial Art Center. Ten Thousand Vines Winery is proud to welcome the Centennial Arts Center home again.

Our annual competition is coming up, so time to venture down into the cellar and dust off that bottled masterpiece. There are a lot of competitions out there, but who wants to ship out their wine and wait months for a letter in the mail?
Here’s how it works. If you are a customer of Ten Thousand Vines, you can enter up to three wines for an entry fee of $3 per wine. The entry form is very simple and we will be awarding medals for Best Red, White, Fruit and Label design. Jeff Cyran from Colonial Wines will again be professionally judging the wines and providing an individual scoresheet with feedback. All entrants and their guests are invited to free Awards Reception on June 9th where we will announce the winners.
Entries must be received by Saturday, June 4th at 6 PM. Our Awards Reception will be held on Thursday, June 9th at 7 PM. If you are not entering any wines, but would like to meet some fellow winemakers, you are welcome to join us at the reception as well.

Coming in January:

Australian Shiraz/Viognier ($145.00) - The Wine: Blending red and white grapes brings lush balance to this lively, deep ruby wine. Ripe berry fruit and violet aromas from the Shiraz are balanced by floral and stone fruit notes from the Viognier, with beguiling hints of orange blossom followed by toast and smokiness. There’s sufficient acidity to give it structure, but the overall impression is soft and velvety. The long, gentle finish is ripe and appealing with surprising complexity.

The Food: A great choice for game or meat dishes, it also works spectacularly with ratatouille and even soft fruit, especially combined with soft-ripened or goat’s cheeses. It’s also great all by itself as an elegant sipping wine.

Pacifico White ($139.00) - The Wine: Pacifica White showcases bright fruit, excellent structure and a long layered finish running out from a veritable fruit salad of flavors and aromas. Complex pear and honey notes, grassy citrus and grapefruit, ripe apple, fig, melon, peach, and pineapple all mellow into spicy, honey, butter, butterscotch and hazelnut flavors that linger beguilingly.

The Food: Full-bodied yet supple, this wine has a range of fruit characters and enough acidity to stand up to a wide range of foods. Off dry, but perfectly balanced it works well with spices, seafood, clams, mussels in saffron cream, and especially with Asian food.

Coming in February:

Italian Primitivo ($145.00)- The Wine: Italian Primitivo is medium red in color veering to brick, rich, and concentrated, exuding aromas of blackberry, plums, tobacco, prunes and red cherries, with the Italian signature of firm tannins and a long, gripping finish with notes of vanilla and toast. Like most Italian reds it retains acidity to balance fruit character and marry well with food.

The Food: Primitivo shines in the company of assertively flavored foods like lamb, pork, grilled beef, ribs, roasted red meats, wild game, spicy cheeses and pizza. Its firm backbone of acids and tannins make it work well with rich and spicy foods like Italian sausages or lasagna.

Coming in March:

Austrian Gruner Veltliner ($139.00) - The Wine: Grüner Veltliner produces stunningly intense and concentrated wines that start with citrus and grapefruit aromas, hinting from the very beginning at the variety’s most distinguishing characteristic, the spicy fragrance of freshly ground white pepper. In addition to white pepper they can also show aromas of sour apples, flowers and minerals —surprisingly delicate.

The Food: The steely dryness and bracing acidity of Grüner Veltliner works brilliantly with seafood, mussels, salmon, grilled halibut, fish stew, and grilled oysters.

Coming in April:

Portuguese Douro Tinto ($145.00) - The Wine: A blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca, the names may be unfamiliar, but Tinta Roriz is the same grape as Spanish Tempranillo. Together they make an intensely aromatic wine with an impressive depth of fruit and complexity. Black fruits such as cassis along with mulberry and raspberry predominate and are complemented by plums and tobacco, followed by the resinous aromas of violets and rockrose. High tannin levels and good natural acidity mean that the wine has an excellent potential for aging without loss of structure or balance.

The Food: Incredibly flexible as a food wine, Douro Tinto will match perfectly with roasted lamb, or duck, barbecued meats, grilled eel and meat sauces. The finesse and complexity also make it intriguing just on its own.

Wine Competition Results!

Congratulations to all who entered our recent wine competition. Our professional wine judge, Jeff Cyran from Colonial Wines in Orchard Park, was again impressed this year with the variety and quality of the entries.

Jeff used a 20 point scale to judge the wines with points being awarded for Clarity (2), Color (2), Bouquet (4), Acidity (1), Sweetness (1), Body (2), Flavor (2), Bitterness (1), Finish (1), and Overall Quality (4). Each wine is individually judged on its own merits, based on its type or varietal of wine.

Once again this year, we had a wine receive 19 out of 20 points. This remarkable wine, made by George Haley, is called Cherry Blossom and was awarded our Best of Show Award. Most notable was the wine's complexity and duration on the palette, which is rare for fruit wines.

Medals were awarded to the winners and runners up in three categories. Red Wine, White Wine, and Fruit. The medals were awarded to:

Wine Making Class and Tasting

Ever wonder how those great wines are made? Mike, our Chief Bottle Washer and winemaker, has been invited to lead a class on winemaking at Colonial Wines and Spirits in Orchard Park. The class will be held on Thursday, December 3rd at 6 PM. We will be preparing a batch of Italian Montepulciano. In addition to the hands on demonstration, we will also be tasting several wines from Ten Thousand Vines to demonstrate how the wine making process can influence the bottled result.

Bottle Your Beaujolais

Chef Avi Altman will be presenting the class, and we will be pouring our wines along side the dishes prepared. Tickets are $25 per person or $40 for two! School is back in session! We are now accepting 'applications' for the second edition of our Wine Enjoyment class. Space is limited, so sign up soon to reserve your spot!

The course consists of three classes scheduled on consecutive Thursday evenings:

Thursday, September 24th 7pm-8:30pm
- Intro: What is Wine?
- Explore your senses
- Wine Tasting: The Basics

Thursday, October 1st 7pm-8:30pm
- Components: How to accurately describe and discuss wine in a way that is universally recognizable to the wine community.

Thursday, October 8th 7pm-8:30pm
- The basics of food and wine pairing
- Wrap up questions
- "Graduation Ceremony"

Cost:
$50 per person
$90 if two tickets are purchased at the same time.

*All materials, including wine, are covered in the ticket price. Upon completion of this course, each student will receive a certificate and special gift from us!
